The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) published a statement highlighting recent measures by Peru and Paraguay to guarantee the rights of the LGBTI population, but expressed concern about the conservative waves in civil society.
This week, the Supreme Court ruled that a transgender inmate at the Alto Hospicio prison (Iquique) may only be examined by female nursing staff. The ruling also mandates that prison officials receive training on gender identity and expression.

While she praised the legislative progress, she expressed concern about the violation of the rights of the trans population, the invisibility of lesbians, and institutional violence.

“The police threw us to the ground and kept saying, ‘Kid, kid, stay calm,’” said Amanda, one of the lesbians beaten and illegally detained by the police. Some were taken to the 1st Police Station, others to the 4th Precinct station, at Zabaleta and Chutro. All were released this morning.
