Police tortured a young trans woman: she remains in custody

The organization Panambí filed a complaint against Asunción police for “torture and cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment” of a 23-year-old transgender woman. She has been detained for a week and says she is being arbitrarily accused. The complaint was filed with the Human Rights Prosecutor's Office in Asunción and the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (MNP).

A young trans woman is accused of discrimination at a nightclub in Mar del Plata.

“Are you a woman or a transvestite? Because if you’re a transvestite, we have to charge you admission,” Ximena, a young trans woman, recounted being told at the Clip Club nightclub in Mar del Plata. They are organizing a sit-in at the club's entrance on Saturday, September 2nd at 6 PM. They are also demanding: “Training on sexual diversity and gender identity is not being provided.” 

A nurse is accused of sexually abusing a trans woman in a hospital.

It happened at San Martín Hospital in La Plata. Shirley, a 61-year-old trans woman, went to the emergency room due to a spike in blood pressure. There, she was treated using male pronouns, and then, according to her complaint, a nurse sexually assaulted her in an elevator. A formal complaint has been filed, and yesterday social organizations held a press conference at the provincial Ministry of Health.

Andrea González was murdered in December 2016 in Ciudad del Este. She was 20 years old and had a hearing impairment. This is the first transphobic murder in Paraguay where the Prosecutor's Office has filed charges, but there are reports that a witness has been threatened and the main suspect is under house arrest. A march was held to demand that the crime not go unpunished. "They kill us and no one goes to jail."
