Lima vibrated with pride and demands from LGBTI+ people

For many, it was a day of struggle; for others, a day of resistance; and for still others, simply a day of celebration commemorating International LGBTI+ Pride Day. On Saturday, thousands of people took to the streets of Lima to march in a country where, despite a lack of progress in rights, the visibility of diverse identities is steadily increasing.

Pride in struggle: thousands marched against transvesticide and transfemicide

Fueled by the landmark ruling in the Diana Sacayán transvesticide case and a powerful mobilization, the 3rd National March “Stop Transvesticide and Transfemicide” brought thousands of people out of their homes. Unlike previous demonstrations, where only transvestites and trans people and some members of the LGBTI community participated, this time the “green wave” feminist movement, with its contingent from the Campaign for Legal Abortion, was joined by Nora Cortiñas, a Mother of Plaza de Mayo, and Sergio Maldonado, brother of Santiago Maldonado.

Two years after the hate crime, Nicole Saavedra is remembered and the prosecutor is relieved of his duties.

Two years after her murder, the crime of Nicole Saavedra Bahamondes, the young lesbian woman killed in June 2016, remains unsolved. Last week, the National Prosecutor's Office informed the family that the investigation will now be led by a woman. This gives them more confidence, her family told Presentes during a ceremony held at the exact spot where her body was found two years ago.
