Trans attacks are a constant in Peru, although they are often not made visible in mainstream media.
On the morning of March 5, in the Los Olivos district, Lima province, Colunche Sosa J, a trans woman, was attacked by a man identified as Vegas Laberry A. Colunche's face was destroyed and, according to the legal medicine report made at the Los Olivos police station where she filed the complaint, it qualifies as a "serious injury".
The Casa Trans Zuleymi made this attack public, and Miluska Luzquiños, activist and founder, explained to Presentes that "last week we also had another case of a trans colleague from Chiclayo who was brutally attacked in almost the same way as Colunche."
The Ministry of Women assigned a lawyer to support Colunche and pursue legal action. However, since Peru lacks a gender identity law, the case cannot be classified as a gender-based aggravating circumstance. If it were to be, it could set a precedent.
Casa Trans Zuleymi has already submitted the case to the Center for Documentation and Trans Situation of Latin America and the Caribbean (CEDOSTAL).
So far this year, according to the organization's figures, eight trans women have been assaulted by people close to them. However, Zuleymi, a representative of Casa Trans, warns that "without a legal framework to protect them, these acts of violence remain invisible."
