She fought for her license and created a national network of trans teachers

Quimey Ramos, the trans teacher who made headlines last month for transitioning mid-year, is leading a national network of trans teachers. Now, she has just won another battle: she finally obtained the medical leave that had been denied her for gender reassignment surgery. “What happened to me serves as a lesson for any teacher to have the tools to assert their rights. I’m happy to be in this position here, to empower others and continue empowering ourselves together,” she told Presentes.

Attack on a trans activist in Lima

Letsmar Bravo was attacked by two men who stabbed her in the chest with a piece of glass. “I was standing here peacefully, working, and two guys came and stuck a piece of glass in my chest, and the security guards didn't do anything,” she says in a video shared on social media. In 2016, there were seven homicides of transgender women and 191 reported cases of human rights violations against members of that community.

Lesbian, trans, transvestite, and bisexual feminists brought their demands and debates to the National Women's Meeting, which concludes this Monday in Chaco. For the first time in 32 years, the lesbian march and festival were included in the official program. Today in Resistencia, it was decided that the next National Women's Meeting in 2018 will be held in Chubut.
