Tehuel de la Torre: the oral trial has been brought forward to July 2024

The Criminal Court No. 2 of La Plata made the decision today at the request of the Association of Family and Friends of Tehuel de la Torre and the Organizing Committee of the Pride March - Historical Line.

The Criminal Court No. 2 of La Plata today decided to move up the trial date to July 2024 for the crime of aggravated homicide motivated by hatred of gender identity in the case of Tehuel de la Torre, a young trans man who disappeared in March 2021. His whereabouts, what happened to him, and the location of his remains are still unknown.

The trial was scheduled for August 2027 but was brought forward thanks to the work of the campaign by the Association of Family Members and Friends of Tehuel de la Torre and the Organizing Committee of the Pride March – Historical Line. This demand was supported by the prosecutor in the case, Juan Pablo Canigia, as well as representatives from INADI (National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism) and the national and Buenos Aires provincial ministries of women, gender, and diversity, who also participated in the hearing.

Also present at the hearing were Tehuel's mother, Norma Nahuelcura , and the prosecuting attorney in the case, Flavia Centurión, along with the Organizing Committee of the Pride March – Historical Line.

The case and the defendants

In case No. 6753/1776 – IPP 06-05-001038-21/00, Oscar Alberto Montes and Luis Alberto Ramos with the crime of aggravated homicide motivated by hatred based on gender identity. Additionally, the request for house arrest made by the defense attorney for the accused Oscar Montes was addressed at the same hearing.

The prosecution and the plaintiffs opposed the request, and the court agreed to deny the granting of the benefit of house arrest.

This claim had the support of the prosecutor in the case, Juan Pablo Canigia, INADI, and the ministries of women, gender and diversity of the nation and the province of Buenos Aires, who also participated in the hearing.
