“Making our diversity visible without violence”

Founded in 2013, the organization Mujeres Trans Argentina (Trans Women Argentina) brings together 1,800 trans women from across the country in its private Facebook group. “This platform already functions as a channel and means of communication, as a place for debate and discussion, as a political and social agenda. Now what we're doing is turning this into information to share with everyone,” explains Alba. It was on March 24th, at the National Day of Remembrance march in Plaza de Mayo: “We started talking about the need for us to be the ones who tell our stories and make our reality and diversity visible without violence. Without the violence, racism, and discrimination that have always been used to treat our lives.” That day it began as a utopian project. But immediately a group of activists set to work, figuring out how they could make it a reality. They secured the support of the National University of the Arts (UNA), the Metropolitan School of Dramatic Arts (EMAD), and Espacio Tole-Tole to use their equipment and facilities to meet, work, and film. They also partnered with the Acá Association of Culture, Art, and Education for training, because one of the project's motivations is to create jobs: the people involved are receiving collective training in editing, graphic design, screenwriting, camera operation, sound, lighting, and every other skill, trade, and profession that the audiovisual communication machine requires.

Quarterly and federal

For now, only the first episode has been produced, but they are already working on the idea for future episodes. The plan is to launch Noti-Trans on a quarterly basis in 2018 and expand its coverage to a national level, Rueda explains: “Although we produced this program in Buenos Aires, the idea is to create a news program that incorporates the value of activism and life experiences in the provinces and bring it to other spaces and organizations because what we want is for it to be a tool for empowerment for everyone.” NotiTrans will be presented on Sunday, December 17th at 3:30 PM at the National University of the Arts (Venezuela 2587, CABA).
