Mountain Medicine: from radio to community organization
What kind of information do they provide?
The situation created by the COVID-19 pandemic was covered from the perspective of Indigenous organizations through the radio station La Voz Indígena (The Indigenous Voice). Coverage was also given to members of the organization during food distribution, alongside the soup kitchens they run. Some of the campaign's themes included: responsibility for the land and its contamination through deforestation, chemical waste, large-scale soy farming, and other factors; the use of traditional medicine and ancestral wisdom as a response to health problems (honey, fever-reducing herbs, and support in caregiving, among others); the context of scarcity and inequality faced by Indigenous communities (lack of access to water or clandestine water) and, consequently, their demands on the State to address the pandemic; and the importance of the forest and native territories, both as a people and as providers of food and ancestral medicines, and as a space for struggle and the presence of traditional knowledge.
