More than 250 media outlets from 70 countries joined this global day of action called by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and the citizens' movement Avaaz to demand protection for journalists in Palestine and independent access for the international press to coverage.
According to Reporters Without Borders, 220 journalists have been killed by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip in nearly 23 months. On the night of August 10-11, Israeli forces killed six journalists in a targeted attack claimed by Israel against Al Jazeera in the enclave, Anas al-Sharif. On Monday, August 25, the Israeli army killed another five journalists in a double-target attack .
Hundreds of media outlets from nearly fifty countries, brought together at the urging of Reporters Without Borders (RSF) and Avaaz, are mobilizing today in solidarity with Palestinian journalists in the Gaza Strip. Black or entirely black newspaper front pages, banners on digital media, and audio and video messages broadcast on radio and television mark this international mobilization.
In line with the appeal launched in June by RSF and the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), the media outlets participating in this campaign are making three demands:
-Together, we denounce the killing of journalists by the Israeli army in the Gaza Strip and call for an end to impunity for crimes committed against reporters.
-Together, we ask that the urgent evacuation of Palestinian journalists who wish to leave be permitted.
-Together, we ask the Israeli authorities to allow independent access for the international press to the Gaza Strip.
Eight days before the opening of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, we demand firm action from the international community and call on the United Nations Security Council to put an end to the Israeli army's crimes against Palestinian journalists.
