Why Márquez's statements are false, homophobic, and dangerous

Speaking on Ernesto Tenembaum's program on Radio con Vos, Nicolás Márquez, a lawyer and Javier Milei's representative, defended homophobia.

"When the State promotes, incentivizes, and finances homosexuality—as it has done until Javier Milei appeared on the scene—it is encouraging self-destructive behavior," said Nicolás Márquez, a lawyer, friend, and mentor of Javier Milei. This morning on Ernesto Tenembaum's program on Radio con Vos, Márquez made several statements laced with misinformation and hatred.

The speech by Márquez, who along with Agustín Laje is the author of The Black Book of the New Left , Gender Ideology, or Cultural Subversion , and presents himself as a lecturer and writer, attempts to confuse the protection of human rights with what they call "gender ideology." And behind this *objectively* lies misleading data and false claims.

FALSE: “When the State promotes, incentivizes, and finances homosexuality, it is incentivizing self-destructive behavior.”

No State 'promotes or incentivizes' homosexuality. People are diverse in sexual orientations and gender identities. This should not expose anyone to hatred or prejudice. The rights of same-sex couples and transgender people are protected by the Convention on Human Rights.

It is the obligation of States to ensure the integrity of all persons and protect their human rights, as required by the International Court of Human Rights .

Saying that it is "promoted and encouraged" seeks to establish the idea that homosexuality is a "construction." If the state were to withdraw, it would cease to exist. Furthermore, it seeks to justify the defunding of state programs ranging from the right to health care to the right to work.

FALSE: “A person with homosexual tendencies lives 25 years (on average) less than a heterosexual person”

Márquez equates being an LGBT+ person with a pathology, this is FALSE.

On May 17, 1990, the World Health Organization (WHO) General Assembly removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). For this reason, the International Day Against Homohate is commemorated annually on that date.

And if the information you're presenting were true, what do we do? Do we take away the gay aspect? It could almost be interpreted as promoting so-called conversion therapies, classified as torture by the United Nations.

If an LGB+ person lives less, it is because of hatred and prejudice, and these types of statements on the radio fuel them.

FALSE AND DANGEROUS : “(Homosexual people) are 14 times more likely to commit suicide, 80% of people in the West with HIV are homosexual.”

Homosexual people, although there are laws that protect them, suffer discrimination in different areas.

A recent survey in Mexico found that among LGBT people ages 13 to 17, those with support in family and school settings showed better mental health outcomes . They also had fewer suicidal thoughts, a sensitive topic that doesn't allow for amplifying potentially harmful ignorance on radio.

DECEPTIVE: “I find it brutally reckless that the State is encouraging unhealthy, self-destructive behavior.”

Homosexuality is a sexual orientation, just like heterosexuality. It has nothing to do with self-destruction. Being LGBT+ is an identity, not a decision made based on what they call "gender ideologies"—a nonexistent definition they seek to impose.

These types of discourses instill hatred and prejudice through lies and deception. They seek to establish that the State is the one encouraging people to be LGBT+, denying our identity as a whole, seeking to justify the defunding of rights such as education, healthcare, and employment, and leading people to believe that it's possible for us to "stop being LGBT+" by choice or conversion. The State is the one that must ensure the full exercise of rights under equal conditions for all people.
