Lawyer and lesbian feminist activist Greta Pena is the new director of INADI

Pena was in charge of the Undersecretariat of Diversity Policies of the Nation and will now be the new administrator of the agency.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina. Lawyer, journalist, and public policy specialist Greta Pena has left her position at the Undersecretariat of Diversity Policies of the Nation and will be the new administrator of the Institute against Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Racism .

The information was made official in the last hours of Monday, January 9, with the publication in the Official Gazette of Decree 15/2023 signed by President Alberto Fernández; the Minister of Justice, Martín Soria; and the Minister of Women, Gender and Diversity, Ximena Ayelén Mazzina Guiñazú .

A track record in management

Pena assumed her position in March 2022 at the Undersecretariat of Diversity Policies of the Nation, a post previously held by Alba Rueda (current Special Representative of Argentina on Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity) . One of her first tasks was to support Higui's trial and join the efforts to find Tehuel alive .

Before her arrival at the Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity , she was the deputy executive director of the National Disability Agency .

Greta Pena has worked in management since 1997. She was the director of prevention and investigation of discriminatory practices at INADI (National Institute Against Discrimination, Xenophobia and Racism), and a coordinator in the National Undersecretariat for the Promotion of Human Rights. She also served on the Gender Policies Directorate of the National Public Prosecutor's Office.

The civil association 100% Diversity and Rights , a space founded by Pena, stated: “Throughout his career he worked on issues of disability, gender, sexual diversity, ethnic-racial communities, religious diversity and access to justice, among others.”

The association points out that the official testified before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in Costa Rica as part of the process that culminated in the first advisory opinion on sexual diversity and gender identity.

Furthermore, it highlights the official's participation in the drafting process of UNICEF's Antigua Declaration on "Intergenerational Dialogue on Gender Equality and the Rights of Girls, Adolescents and Women"; and of the Buenos Aires Declaration at the ECLAC conference "The Care Society, a Horizon for a Sustainable Recovery with Gender Equality".

The appointment

Along with the appointment of Greta Pena, the intervention of INADI was extended until December 10, 2023.

Until December 2022, the position was held by Victoria Donda, who reported that the presidency would not renew her position, which was due to expire on December 31, so she resigned the day before.

In the official bulletin published on Monday, in addition to the extension of the intervention, Pena's appointment, and the termination of her position at the Ministry of Women, Gender and Diversity, they also expressed gratitude for Donda's service. This is stated in Article 2 of the decree: “The resigning official is thanked for the valuable services rendered in the performance of said duties.”

The name of the person designated to fill the position Pena held at the Ministry of Women was not yet known. On December 31, the new head of INADI published a summary of her tenure as Undersecretary of Diversity.
