Presentes received a Carlos Jáuregui award for his journalistic work

The Carlos Jáuregui awards recognized a dozen individuals and organizations for their commitment to a more democratic, fair, free, and diverse society.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina . In a ceremony at the historic Manzana de las Luces (Block of Enlightenment) in Buenos Aires, the Fundación Igualdad (Equality Foundation) presented the Carlos Jáuregui Awards on Saturday, November 12, to a dozen individuals and organizations. The awards recognize “those who fight for equality and non-discrimination, from the perspective of historical memory, human rights, gender, and diversity.”

In this third edition of the awards, Agencia Presentes received the prize for “its contribution to a more democratic, just, free, and diverse society,” along with many people about whom the agency reports or whom it consults as sources. Colleagues Silvina Molina and Alicia Alvado from the Télam news agency also received awards for their journalistic work.

The award recipients were: Daniela Ruiz, Ernesto Ardito, Amerika Disco, Gabriela Alegre, Gabriela Mansilla, and her 15-year-old daughter, Luana—the youngest person to ever receive the Carlos Jáuregui Award. Veteran activist Norma Castillo read poems aloud in memory of her partner, Cachita. The National Institute Against Discrimination and Xenophobia (INADI) and the Mocha Celis Trans Popular High School, which recently celebrated its 11th anniversary, were also recognized.

The Carlos Jáuregui Awards were created to honor leading figures in the LGBTIQ+ community of Argentina. They were inaugurated in Rosario in July 1999, during the First Argentine Gay Games organized by the Arco Iris Collective, a sexual diversity organization founded in 1994 in that city.

“In 2021, the Equality Foundation revived this beautiful legacy, now holding the third edition and presentation of the Carlos Jáuregui Awards with the conviction of continuing to recognize those who fight for equality and non-discrimination, from a perspective of historical memory, human rights, gender and diversity,” said Pedro Paradiso Sottile, president of the foundation.

The ceremony opened with the presentation of the award: a framed portrait of Carlos Jáuregui to the distinguished individuals and organizations. This was followed by a reading of texts and poems by Naty Menstrual, Alfonsina Lunar (Noe Oli), Franco Torchia, Alejandro Modarelli, and Pablo Pérez. The event concluded with a performance by Ibiza Pareo.
