These are some of the positive developments that this challenging year has brought for the advancement and restoration of LGBT+ rights in Latin America. We must not forget that it has also been a year of hardships for our region.
Central America with little good news
In the Northern Triangle of Central America, good news has been hard to come by. Aside from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights' ruling condemning the Honduran state for the transfemicide of Vicki Hernández (which doesn't represent progress for the country, but rather for the transfeminist struggle that led to this outcome), other achievements offer hope for 2022. The new president, Xiomara Castro, represents enormous hope for the rights agendas of LGBTQ+ people and Indigenous women first openly gay member of Congress was elected .
In El Salvador, one of the positive outcomes of activism has been the growth of mobilizations and campaigns demanding rights. In Guatemala, the positive developments lie more in the changes that organizations are promoting and coordinating with certain state agencies that operate outside the government's conservative framework. One example is the establishment of a national network to monitor hate crimes. Another is a training agreement between the organization Visibles and the Public Criminal Defense Institute.
In Paraguay, another country lagging far behind in LGBT+ rights, activism launched a strong campaign for the recognition of gender identity. Another achievement was the inclusion of LGBTI segregation within the prison system.
