Argentina will host the First Federal Meeting on Transvestite and Transgender Education: convened by the Mocha Celis high school

It will take place on July 15, 16, and 17. It will be a space for meeting and collective reflection for teachers, students, and transvestite, trans, and non-binary organizations.

At a historic moment in Argentina, with the recent enactment of Law 27.636 on Labor Quota and Inclusion for Transvestites and Transgender People Diana Sacayán – Lohana Berkins Mocha Celis transvestite and transgender popular high school, will be held on July 15, 16 and 17 .

With the premise of rethinking education from feminist and transfeminist pedagogies, it will be a space for meeting and collective reflection for teachers, students and transvestite, trans and non-binary organizations, in order to put possible actions on the agenda to guarantee educational completion and the effective implementation of the Transvestite and Trans Labor Quota Law.

The three main areas of focus of the Meeting are:

  • Popular and dissident feminist education, possible worlds.
  • Feminist pedagogies and a human rights approach.
  • Governmental experiences and public policies.

These axes invite us to think and ask new questions and, above all, to exchange ideas based on this political-pedagogical proposal aimed at thinking about education not only in terms of inclusion, but also as a key to social transformation.

We understand the Federal Meeting as an opportunity to discuss what feminist and transfeminist education means in terms of practice, methodology, and management. The Meeting also represents an opportunity to systematize our practices and, in doing so, continue prioritizing collective construction to generate the necessary self-criticism.

To consider why this political-pedagogical proposal is transformative and necessary, we propose some hypotheses related to addressing educational policy from a perspective of diversity and from a transvestite, trans, and non-binary perspective, within the conditions generated by the politicization of sexuality. When we envision ourselves as another humanity, it is fundamental to recognize desire as a driving force and a transformative power capable of liberating society as a whole. This power is fully and undeniably embodied in our educational practices, in the content and methodologies; in critical pedagogy, which is also a pedagogy of tenderness.

Part of this educational innovation is related, precisely, to the development of content that generates empathy and solidarity from an intersectional perspective, traversed by life trajectories, by narratives in different formats that foster dialogue about the marks of inequality, identities, body and health care, the value of affectivity, the recognition of the gender perspective and respect for diversity as stated in the Comprehensive Sexual Education Law, as a human right.

When we say that “trans fury floods the streets,” we mean that it effectively floods and challenges all institutions as well. The fact that Argentina can be seen today, internationally, as a country at the forefront of legislation is due to the Gender Identity Law, the Equal Marriage Law, and the institutionalization processes that raise the bar in terms of the possibility of achieving rights.

In this context, the Federal Meeting is a new opportunity to continue weaving networks that deepen the historical struggles for social justice in terms of redefining meanings and repairing access to the right to education, which has been denied to most transvestite, trans and non-binary people until now.

Our society already diverse; therefore, education can no longer represent only one part of this society and in binary terms. Schools, the education system, and the state must change. This cultural shift neither begins nor ends with legislation; it also begins with the political agenda and by using education as a response, as a space for resistance, and as a transformative tool.
