According to the Royal Spanish Academy, the word *prieto* or *prieta* refers to something “miserable, scarce, greedy,” although it is also, and specifically in Mexico, used to describe a “dark-skinned person.” It can also refer to a color: “dark-skinned.” But not just any color, rather one that is “very dark and almost indistinguishable from black.”
This term is usually used as an insult. For us, it's quite the opposite; it's more of a symbol that confirms that the amount of melanin does matter. In a country of supposed "racial equality," of proud "mixed-race" people, the way our bodies are perceived is different, and the darker our skin, the worse off we are.
From this discontent, Prietologías was born, from an attempt to redefine this word and, yes , to politicize it as well. Because we know that identifying as dark-skinned in contemporary Mexican society is to take a self-critical stance. Which doesn't mean we want to "convert" anyone, but that doesn't stop us from being the latest generation of millennial leftist propaganda.
That's why it's important to create our own communication channel. Through it, we can discover together how incredible it is to be Black, while at the same time dignifying our work and our existence. The voices you'll hear are those of two politically active, passive-aggressive comrades who went from the whitewashed LGBT university activism to finding a much more transcendental struggle.
What we propose is to challenge the most devastating force through which racism operates: common sense. And for that, we are convinced that Blackness has enormous potential to contribute, especially today when the winds of history are in our favor.
So, without further ado, we invite you to listen to the first season of our podcast; a production of Antifaz, a collaborative platform for political reflection and communication that seeks social change. Don't forget to check out our content and, of course, share your opinions, blessings, or curses with us.
