LGBT+ shelters in Mexico City: how they are facing the pandemic

In Mexico City there are only four shelters for LGBT+ people: Casa Refugio Frida, Casa La Banda, Casa de Día Vida Alegre, and Hogar Casilda Buenrostro.

In Mexico City there are only four shelters for LGBT+ people: Casa Refugio Frida, Casa La Banda, Casa de Día Vida Alegre, and Hogar Casilda Buenrostro .

In the context of the pandemic, the urgent needs intensify; young people are expelled from their homes because their families do not accept their sexual orientation, many have lost their jobs, and others continue to migrate and suffer different forms of violence upon entering Mexico.

“The reality is that migration doesn’t stop, with or without the virus, migration continues,” says Ernesto, a volunteer at Casa La Banda.

We visited Casa Refugio Frida and Casa La Banda, where we spoke with volunteers and residents. Both are projects that survive on in-kind and monetary donations.
