Covid-19: An emergency committee to help LGBT+ people in Mar del Plata

Donations of dry food, personal hygiene products and cleaning supplies needed to assist the group are requested.

By Sandra López Maidana

The mandatory quarantine imposed by the Argentine government to combat the Covid-19 pandemic highlighted, among other things, the inequalities that exist in broad sectors of society. In Mar del Plata, this was particularly evident among trans and gender-diverse people. The situation is further exacerbated by the intersectional circumstances they face: poverty, sex work, lack of access to cultural and social resources, and in many cases, being migrants and/or lacking access to formal employment. A certain sense of surveillance generated by the pandemic has intensified against these individuals, who suffer abuse at the hands of Mar del Plata residents, including threats to call the police when they are seen walking in the streets.

For these reasons, an LGBTQI+ emergency committee was formed, comprised of the organizations Asociación Mundo Igualitario (AMI), 100% Diversidad y Derechos MDP, and the gender and diversity area of the Atahualpa Mar del Plata movement. They are requesting donations of non-perishable food, personal hygiene products, and cleaning supplies needed to support the community.

The Committee coordinated with the Ministry of Women and Diversity of the Province of Buenos Aires. Donations were received from the Faro de la Memoria Collective, and through the #noscuidamosentretodes campaign organized by Orgullo y Lucha, interventions have been made in 120 food emergency situations.
