British police announced on Friday that four men between the ages of 15 and 18 were arrested on suspicion of being responsible for the lesbophobic attacks and robbery suffered by a lesbian couple on a London bus on May 30.
According to information provided by London security forces, the alleged assailants, who are also accused of stealing a wallet and cell phone from the couple, were taken to police stations in the city for questioning.
Melania Geymonat, a 28-year-old Uruguayan woman, was with her partner, Chris, a 30-year-old American, when they were violently attacked by a group of teenagers who began insulting them and demanding they kiss. Geymonat recounted on her Facebook page that her attackers “behaved like hooligans, demanding we kiss so they could watch, calling us 'lesbians' and describing sexual positions… The next thing I knew, Chris was in the middle of the bus fighting with them.” “The next thing I knew, I was being beaten. I felt dizzy when I saw my blood and backed away. I don’t remember if I lost consciousness or not,” she added.
Photographs of the women's bloodied faces circulated on social media in recent days, and the issue gained significant public attention. For this reason, both British Prime Minister Theresa May and the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, addressed the incident.
May said: “This was a sickening attack and my thoughts are with the affected couple. No one should have to hide who they are or who they love, and we must work together to eradicate unacceptable violence against the LGBT community,” added the conservative leader, who officially submitted her resignation as prime minister on Friday.
Meanwhile, the mayor of the UK capital, Labour's Khan, stated on his Twitter account: “This was a disgusting and misogynistic attack. Hate crimes against LGBT people will not be tolerated in London.”
