There was another hate crime in Chile: Brenda Plaza, a 35-year-old trans woman, was murdered over the weekend in Valparaíso, Chile. This case adds to the recent attacks across the region: in Guatemala, an 18-year-old gay activist was murdered, and in Peru, activist Claudia Vera, known for her fight for the rights of people living with HIV, was murdered.
On the other hand, in Peru, there were two positive developments stemming from court decisions. One is a landmark ruling that, for the first time in the country's history, recognized marriage between two women; the second is that the Court ruled in favor of a gender perspective in schools.
Also noteworthy was the first visit of an LGBT delegation to the Vatican, initially planned to meet with Pope Francis but ultimately meeting with his deputy.
