#Peru 20 couples symbolically married on Valentine's Day

Two years after the presentation of the equal marriage bill in the Peruvian Congress, 20 LGBTI couples symbolically married in the Love and Friendship Park, located in the Miraflores district of Lima.

“This activity has been going on for years. The State is not responding to these couples as it should to guarantee and protect the rights of those who want to build a life together. The State has an obligation to these people to improve their lives. No love is illegal. It will take some time, but full recognition of equality will come. It remains to be seen whether those who represent all citizens in parliament will understand this. I hope these weddings will be a beautiful reminder of the struggle for rights and that we will have a law establishing marriage equality,” said Congresswoman Indira Huilca to the newlyweds.

The bill, which was introduced in 2017, proposes the modification of article 234 of the Civil Code, which currently establishes the concept of marriage as "the union voluntarily agreed upon by a man and a woman legally capable of doing so."

“The intervention seeks to draw attention because for two years there has been a legislative proposal that was presented by congresswomen Indira Huilca and Marisa Glave and it has not been addressed,” said the Peruvian Network of Trans, Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual People (Red Peruana TLGB), which is in charge of organizing the event.

In the last 17 years, 200 LGBTI couples have symbolically married in Lima, according to the Peruvian TLGB Network registry.
