On Friday, February 22nd and Saturday, February 23rd, we'll be in Tucumán as part of the Wiki LGBT+ Human Rights project. Together with Wikimedia Argentina, we'll be giving two LGBT+ communication workshops, one for activists and one for journalists. And we'll wrap things up with a marathon collaborative editing session of LGBT+ content on the Spanish Wikipedia.

Why do we work with Wikipedia on LGBT+ content?

Wikipedia in Spanish is the largest free encyclopedia on the web, the fifth most visited site on the Internet (more than 35 million daily visits) and one of the most used sources of daily information in the region.

To ensure that content on sexual diversity has a human rights focus and complies with non-discrimination standards, Presentes and Wikimedia Argentina—the organization that oversees Wikipedia in Argentina—joined forces in the Wiki LGBT+ Human Rights project. This alliance aims to build more inclusive communication and society. We are doing this with the support of the Embassy of Canada. We began in Asunción, Paraguay, and Buenos Aires in November 2018.

The activities will take place at Buró Coworking Tucumán (Batalla de Chacabuco 77, San Miguel de Tucumán). The event is open to activists, journalists, students, and anyone else who wants to participate.

The workshops

On February 22nd, from 6 to 9 pm, we will be holding an LGBT+ communication workshop for journalists. We will analyze the media's coverage and treatment of news about sexual diversity and explore how to approach it from a human rights perspective. One of the key topics will be how to cover and report on hate crimes, and how to mainstream LGBTQ+ issues across the journalistic agenda.

On February 23rd, there will be a communication tools workshop for LGBT+ activists : how to report on the violence perpetrated against LGBT+ people in their communities, how to work with sources, and how to use social media for community communication strategies.

After a lunch break, following the activist workshop we will do an "edit-a-thon" on Wikipedia in Spanish.

What is an edit-a-thon?

An edit-a-thon is an open, free and open meeting to collectively build relevant information for the world's largest encyclopedia.

In the WikiHumanRights edit-a-thons - where this meeting is framed - work is specifically done on how to improve the content of these topics so that the information circulating on Wikipedia is not only well organized and up-to-date but also framed within human rights standards.

What are we going to edit in the LGBT+ Human Rights Wiki?

We will edit and create articles about the history of the LGBT+ movement in Tucumán, the biographies of its leaders and organizations, the violence suffered yesterday and today, the lack of justice and the conquest of rights.

How to participate?

Students, journalists, communicators, lawyers, activists, social and student militants, and all people who want to learn how to edit Wikipedia on these topics can participate.

On the day of the edit-a-thon, participants must come with their Wikipedia account already created. It's a very simple process that can be completed in two steps.
