Marilina Bertoldi, best Argentine album 2018: "This year a lesbian won"

The social media outburst from the artist from Santa Fe when she found out she is the first woman to win this award in 30 years.

"Prender un fuego" (Light a Fire), by Santa Fe-born artist Marilina Bertoldi, was chosen as the Best Argentine Album of the Year in the poll conducted for decades by the No Supplement of the newspaper Página/12. When they called to announce the good news, Bertoldi learned two things: that in thirty years a woman had never won and that the award is given by her peers. This, to put it mildly, set her on fire. "Are you telling me that in 30 years there wasn't a single worthwhile female artist?" she asks in a video she posted on her social media.

"Until now, the history of Argentine rock has been the history of man, within rock. This is the moment when we began to carve out this space for ourselves, because it's not something you're giving us. We're demanding it, and it's still a struggle. Look, when you started getting tired of your own sounds, you said: rock is dead. And no, you're very unfair. At that point, you should have realized that there are other people who have something to say. You called us pains in the ass, you called us everything. And the last thing the winner of this year's poll has to say is: this year, a lesbian won." ]]>
