On Saturday, November 24th, Presentes celebrates its second anniversary, and we're joining Wikimedia Argentina for a collaborative edit of LGBT+ content on the Spanish Wikipedia. It will take place from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM at the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires, with the support of the Department of Communication Sciences. The event is open to activists, journalists, students, and anyone else who wants to participate.
What are we going to edit?
We will edit and create articles about the history of the LGBT+ movement in Argentina, the biographies of its leaders and organizations, the violence suffered yesterday and today, the lack of justice and the conquest of rights.
On this online platform we can continue working together on specific topics and listen to suggestions about what articles to create or update on LGBT+ topics.
What is an edit-a-thon?
An edit-a-thon is an open, free and open meeting to collectively build relevant information for the world's largest encyclopedia.
In the WikiHumanRights edit-a-thons - where this meeting is framed - work is specifically done on how to improve the content of these topics so that the information circulating on Wikipedia is not only well organized and up-to-date but also framed within human rights standards.
How to participate
Students, journalists, communicators, activists, lawyers, activists, social and student militants, and all people who want to learn how to edit Wikipedia on these topics can participate.
On the day of the edit-a-thon, participants must come with their Wikipedia account already created. It's a very simple process that can be completed in two steps. To create your Wikipedia account, click here:Wikipedia user
You can bring your computer (it is not essential because you can work in groups).
LGBT+ Human Rights Wiki: Presents and Wikimedia edit LGBT content
Wiki Human Rights is a project born from an alliance to work on editing Wikipedia on human rights issues in Latin America. Presentes and Wikimedia Argentina are working together to expand content on sexual diversity from this perspective. In addition to an online platform, the project includes in-person activities. The first edit-a-thon was held in Asunción, Paraguay, on November 2nd and 3rd, featuring LGBT+ communication workshops for activists and journalists, followed by an edit-a-thon.
The activity has the support of the Canadian embassy in Argentina and Paraguay.
Wikipedia in Spanish is the largest free encyclopedia on the web, the fifth most visited website on the internet (more than 35 million daily visits), and one of the most used sources of everyday information in the region. To ensure that content on sexual diversity has a human rights focus and complies with non-discrimination standards, Presentes and Wikimedia Argentina—the organization that manages Wikipedia in Argentina—have joined forces in a new project: Wiki Human Rights LGBT+. This alliance seeks to build more inclusive communication and a more inclusive society.
We are committed to journalism that delves into the territories and conducts thorough investigations, combined with new technologies and narrative formats. We want the protagonists, their stories, and their struggles to be present.
