Wikipedia in Spanish is the largest free encyclopedia on the web, the fifth most visited website on the internet (more than 35 million daily visits), and one of the most used sources of everyday information in the region. To ensure that content on sexual diversity has a human rights focus and complies with non-discrimination standards, Presentes and Wikimedia Argentina—the organization that manages Wikipedia in Argentina—have joined forces in a new project: Wiki Human Rights LGBT+. This alliance seeks to build more inclusive communication and a more inclusive society.

What is Wiki LGBT+ Human Rights

Wiki Human Rights is a project that works on editing Wikipedia on human rights issues in Latin America. Presentes is now joining the project to expand Wikipedia's content on sexual diversity from a rights perspective. In addition to a virtual platform, which we will present soon, the project includes in-person activities:

-Open edit-a-thons in which we will focus on editing and improving Wikipedia articles in Spanish about sexual diversity.

-Communication workshops for activists and journalists.

At Presentes, we know that violence motivated by prejudice against LGBT people is a reality in the world, and especially in Latin America it has dramatic figures: according to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), nine people are murdered every week because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

In this, media violence plays a key role: the media has an enormous responsibility and it is often from there that prejudices are not only reproduced but also constructed and violence is exercised against the LGBT community.

The project between Presentes and Wikimedia Argentina was born with the conviction that access to information is a right and a tool for social change.

What are we going to edit in the LGBT+ Human Rights Wiki?

  • From the history of the movement in each country, that of its leaders and organizations, the violence suffered yesterday and today, the lack of justice and the conquest of rights.
  • We will soon share the online platform with you so we can continue working together on specific topics and listen to your suggestions.

Activities: workshops and edit-a-thons

We believe in collective building, and that's why this project is based on activities that include and build upon the contributions of other people and groups. Through training sessions—workshops in communication and tools for activists and journalists—and Wikipedia editing sessions in Spanish, we aim to increase participation in this endeavor.

We're doing this thanks to the support of the Canadian Embassy, and we're starting in Asunción, Paraguay: we'll have two free workshops and a collective edit-a-thon. Everyone is invited to join us.

The next activities will be in Paraguay on November 2nd and 3rd, with open and free participation.
