Diversity scored a victory in the primary elections held by political parties in four US states. In Vermont, Christine Hallquist became the first transgender woman to be chosen as a candidate to run for governor of the country.
Hallquist, 62, won the primary on Tuesday to run for governor in the November election. She will face Republican Phil Scott, the current Vermont governor seeking reelection. Hallquist scored highest in the name recognition poll, with 41%, 12 percentage points ahead of her Democratic rival, Brenda Siegel.
Hallquist transitioned in 2015, after years of keeping it private, while leading the Vermont Electricity Cooperative, years before launching her gubernatorial campaign. While working at the energy company, Hallquist became the first female CEO of a company to undergo gender reassignment surgery, a process for which she remained in her position. “My journey to being my authentic self certainly wasn’t easy. However, it has always been important for me to live openly and honestly. I chose to transition in a very public way because I felt I owed it to those at the Vermont Electric Cooperative who placed their trust in me,” Hallquist said when launching her political career.
