Montevideo celebrates Trans Art Week

From Monday, April 9 to Sunday, April 15, musicians, dancers, designers, illustrators, documentary filmmakers, actors, photographers and activists from Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil and Germany, will display their art in different cultural venues in the city, as part of Trans Art Week (#SAT2018).

The Yogyakarta Principles (principles on how international human rights standards and legislation apply to issues of sexual orientation and gender identity)  are being celebrated during Trans Art Week in Montevideo. From Monday, April 9th ​​to Sunday, April 15th , musicians, dancers, designers, illustrators, documentary filmmakers, actors, photographers, and activists from Uruguay, Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, and Germany will showcase their art in various cultural venues throughout the city, brought together by the second edition of Trans Art Week (#SAT2018). “#SAT2018 is an international art festival. It emerged as a collective effort and aims to make trans people visible, highlighting their relationship with art and the right to culture, as well as the diverse, non-hegemonic perspectives on these identities, in order to foster dialogue among cultural agents, artists, and society,” said event coordinator Delfina Martínez to Presentes. Dani Umpi “We are not visible, there are few of us, and I think the sign of that is not only that more painters and photographers appear, but that we are in decision-making positions in all places, in absolutely all spaces,” said Argentine trans artist Susy Shock in an interview for the festival.

The agenda for the trans art festival

Alongside the flock of hummingbirds, Susy Shock will open the event at Sala Zitarrosa on Monday, April 9th ​​at 8:00 PM. The festival lineup also includes Argentinian trans rapper Sasha Sathya, Uruguayan artist Dani Umpi, and trans biker performer Sofía Saunier, among other artists. “It is good for the country to be able to make visible that trans people exist and also exist within art, even if we do not live off of it, but that society as a whole and even trans people themselves can know that we can be those who enjoy and also create artistic expressions is something fundamental for the right to culture,” wrote Saunier for the presentation of #SAT2018. Sofia Saunier The meeting “is a commitment to the swift approval of the comprehensive bill for trans people that is currently under parliamentary discussion in Uruguay,” the organizers stated.                    The second edition of Trans Art Week – the first was held in 2016 – is organized by the Diversity Secretariat of the Montevideo Municipality, in conjunction with the British Council and the Outburst queer art festival from Northern Ireland.
