Peru: The equal marriage bill has reached Congress

It proposes the modification of article 234 of the Civil Code, which currently establishes the concept of marriage as "the union voluntarily agreed upon by a man and a woman legally capable of doing so."

The bill proposes amending Article 234 of the Civil Code, which currently defines marriage as "the union voluntarily entered into by a man and a woman legally capable of doing so." Congresswomen Indira Huilca and Marisa Glave, from the Broad Front party, along with members of parliament from various political parties, presented the bill this morning to regulate same-sex marriage in Peru. The bill proposes modifying Article 234 of the Civil Code, which currently defines marriage as "the union voluntarily entered into by a man and a woman legally capable of doing so."

  The new law seeks to remove the terms "man" and "woman" from the article, replacing them with: "the union voluntarily entered into by two legally eligible persons." It also proposes that "both spouses have equal rights, duties, and responsibilities in the home."   The bill also establishes the recognition of same-sex marriages performed abroad.   The initiative is proposed in coordination with the organizations Matrimonio Igualitario Perú, Mhol Perú, Red Peruana TLGBI and Promsex.
